Natural Hair on The Corner- Janelle Monae Let’s Her Hair Down
Everyone loves this pint size diva with the updo that reaches for heavens. However, over the weekend the Tight Rope singer let her tresses down after her performance at the Bonnaroo festival last weekend.
I love her with her hair down. I’d like to see more of it. It actually compliments her laid back rocker chic look.
What say you? Love it or leave it alone?!

Fashion News on The Corner- Black Models, Actresses and Musicians in Fashion Ad Campaigns
It seems like fashion has turned over a new leaf. While we’re not seeing a lot of Black models on the runway and on the cover of glossies, they are popping up for new Spring/Summer 2014 ad campaigns.
It’s one small step for the Black model and one giant leap for the fashion industry, who seem to omit models of color without thinking twice. While we see the little sprinkles of the token Black girls (Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn) at certain shows, the majority of shows don’t have a model of color at all. And the shows that include more than one are covered in the media, as if they are a spectacle, hence the Rick Owens show this past September. (Which I thought was awesome by the way)
Seeing a model of color on a magazine other than Ebony or Essence, seems like Christmas all over again. The excitement is like that of a kid waking up to a shiny new bike with a bell. We can now look forward to Zoe Saldana on the cover of Lucky mag a month after Kerry Washington. We can also look forward to Lupita and Oprah on the cover of the February issues of W mag.
I’m elated that the fashion industry is opening up their minds to the fact that we can also sell merchandise and we are not just a strong buying force. I hope this is not a trend.
How do you guys feel about the new ad campaigns?
From top left, clock wise:
Lupita Nyongo for Miu Miu, Maria Borges and Riley and Riley M for Givenchy, Erkyah Badu for Givenchy, Rihanna for Balmain
PS- Check out Jourdan Dunn and ASAP Rocky for DKNY

Fashion on The Corner- Have a Sheer Moment a la Kelly Roland

Hey honeybuns. Let’s jump right into this. Has everyone seen this photo of Kelly Roland? She looks absolutely amazing. I can’t wait until this weather breaks so I can have a chic sheer moment. No bras allowed, probably just nude nipple covers. I’m in the itty bitty titty committee. We can get away with no bras. But that’s another conversation.

Will you ladies dare to have a sheer moment? I know I def will. And “I like my kisses down low, make me arch my back.” In case you were wondering. Lol, until next post.

Musical Motivation- Tamar Braxton “Love and War”

I know this song came out a few months ago but I can’t get it out of my head. Its for a good reason though, I love it. I rarely listen to the radio these days because I don’t like the quality of music being produced, even by some of the biggest stars. This song reminds me of a real old school R&B song. You relate to it when you hear it. You want to play it. It evokes a certain emotion, takes you somewhere. That’s what music is suppose to do. Not to mention she, her, Tamar did that on the vocals. She sounds amazing.

When I do fall in love I’ll really blast it. Way to go Tamar.

Musical Motivation- Solange Knowles “Losing You”

This girl clearly walks to the beat of her own drum and it works for her. She is a prime example of what being true to yourself can lead to. The beat is ridiculous and the tone and feel is unlike anything we’ve heard before. Much needed right now, because I’m too bored with the music that’s out there. Check out her True album, its everything.

Can’t leave without mentioning the colorful fashions. Only Solange can rock a orange suit with pumps. Love the curly always. xo
