Fashion News on The Corner- Black Models, Actresses and Musicians in Fashion Ad Campaigns
It seems like fashion has turned over a new leaf. While we’re not seeing a lot of Black models on the runway and on the cover of glossies, they are popping up for new Spring/Summer 2014 ad campaigns.
It’s one small step for the Black model and one giant leap for the fashion industry, who seem to omit models of color without thinking twice. While we see the little sprinkles of the token Black girls (Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn) at certain shows, the majority of shows don’t have a model of color at all. And the shows that include more than one are covered in the media, as if they are a spectacle, hence the Rick Owens show this past September. (Which I thought was awesome by the way)
Seeing a model of color on a magazine other than Ebony or Essence, seems like Christmas all over again. The excitement is like that of a kid waking up to a shiny new bike with a bell. We can now look forward to Zoe Saldana on the cover of Lucky mag a month after Kerry Washington. We can also look forward to Lupita and Oprah on the cover of the February issues of W mag.
I’m elated that the fashion industry is opening up their minds to the fact that we can also sell merchandise and we are not just a strong buying force. I hope this is not a trend.
How do you guys feel about the new ad campaigns?
From top left, clock wise:
Lupita Nyongo for Miu Miu, Maria Borges and Riley and Riley M for Givenchy, Erkyah Badu for Givenchy, Rihanna for Balmain
PS- Check out Jourdan Dunn and ASAP Rocky for DKNY

Women’s Fashion on The Corner- Style Motivation
So according to Iris, if your hair is laid and you have on a good shoe, you can conquer the world.
Just a reminder as to how far being presentable can take you.
The only thing cute about today was my @jcrew rainy day ballet flats. Ugh, I hate the rain but I was cute though. #fashion #shoes #rain #instamood #instafashion
Fashion on The Corner- Easing Into Spring
So a few weeks ago the ground hog came out of the hole and said there will be an early spring. I guess that’s what happened. I really don’t understand the whole groundhog situation but anything that even hints at this winter being over is alright in my book. So since spring or spring like weather will arrive in about four weeks, I say we welcome it by incorporating a few bright pieces to our looks.
In September, the spring/summer 2013 runway shows had large amounts of eye popping color. Everything from light pastel hues to bold neons floated down the catwalk. While the temps are still frigid here in NYC one might not feel the need to add color to their everyday wear. I suggest starting small and easing into springish outfits.
The collage above shows a few pieces I think would be perfect to rock now before flowers start to bloom and temps reach the 60s and 70s. Try adding color with a pair of earrings, a new nail polish, a cocktail ring, stackable bangles or place a bright short skirt over your opague tights. Either way you go, you’ll look great and at the very least brighten the mood in the office.
Let me know how you all are preparing for spring. I know I can’t wait.
Closet cleaning continues. 5 inches, gold/silver metallics, with pearls and crystals. This is alot of shoe. Should I eBay or consign, because I don’t want them? #fashion #fashionista #shoes #instafashion #closetthetruth #sale
Going through my closet and found this amongst other treasures. Luca Luca couture bustier and shoes to match. If you ever see a replica its a fraud. #fashion #shoes #instafashion #beauty #couture #fashionista #closetthetruth
Fashion on The Corner - Tall Girls in Heels
So I overheard and read recently that tall girls (5’9 and above I consider tall) shouldn’t wear heels. Or more shockingly, some tall girls refuse to wear heels because they feel awkward. I’m completely flabbergasted. Like where did these notions come from?
They need to stop right now at this instant. I’m a tall girl and I absolutely adore it. So much so that you rarely see me in anything lower than 4inches. In fact my whole shoe arsenal goes from about three pairs of flats to all 4inches and above. I only purchased flats when I was pregnant.
The shoes in the pic above are 5 inches with a platform. They’re Cesare Paciotti and my favorite pair. I stand about 6’3” in them and I wish a motherlover would tell me I’m already tall so I shouldn’t wear heels. That’s bout the dumbest shit I ever heard. There’s nothing like a tall confident woman strutting in high heels. Embrace your height. Its a gift not a burden.
